This module delves into security issues from a holistic point of view whereby development is not only equated with the goal of poverty reduction andsecurity with theprotection of state sovereignty but a recognition that ?development retrogresses if people do not feel secure and lasting security cannot be achieved if people do not see development taking place. The module builds on Amartya Sen?s understanding of development as ?freedom from want and freedom from fear.?
