In this contemporary world, social workers need to have a good understanding of development and processes through which such development occurs. There are different context-specific perspectives that try to explain the development process. In this course students will be exposed to the concept of development, key development theories/paradigms and the application of these theories in their own contexts. They will be provoked to have a critical understanding of the theories, debates and nature of development at local, regional and international levels. The course will also explore the challenges and dilemmas that keep developing countries in poverty and underdevelopment; and the critical strategic factors for achieving development in these countries.
