ADM 5101 Introduction to Educational Adminstration and  Management

Course description

For any education institution to do well, survive and thrive or not, it mainly depends upon its management and leadership. This course provides an overview of the field of Management and  leadership  of educational institutions. To effectively and efficiently manage the education service delivery, there must be knowledge of general management theory and adherence to set up laws, rules, policies, procedure and practice. This course therefore provides students with foundation knowledge of educational management, administration and leadership. 

 The course equips a student with the theoretical understanding and practical skills required to effectively manage and administer schools and thus make a positive difference in the education system. The course enables students to use available tools and invent more, through research, to facilitate effective administration, management  and leadership of educational institutions. A student teacher must have some knowledge of the laws that govern the education sector, in which s/he will be operating.


 Course Objectives

  1. To equip a student with the theoretical understanding and practical skills required to effectively manage and administer schools and thus make a positive difference in the education system.

2.    To identify and explore important concepts, theories and practices in the administration of educational institutions today.

3.    For students to familiarize themselves with the current laws, rules, policies, procedures and practices that govern activities in institutions of learning so as to act within the law and ensure that no stakeholder in the sectors gets a raw deal.

4.    To discuss the latest policies practices and challenges in education administration with a view of practicing and proposing better ways for school administration in order that educational goals are obtained.

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, serious students will be able to:

·         define the concepts of Management and Administration

·         explain and be able to apply Theories of Management in education

·         Understand the meaning of School Administration

·         discuss the tasks and roles of a headteacher/principal

·         explain the application of Administrative instruments such as authority, power, responsibility and delegation and discuss the administration of student services, control and discipline in schools

·         apply the theories of bureaucracy and describe the theory and process of decision making in administration and be able to use them in real school administration life.

·         Know about law in general, the purpose and importance of laws that govern education access and be familiar with the Teacher Profession Code of Conduct, The Education Policy Handbook, Government White Paper on Education and the latest documents on education administration at all levels.

·         research into the field of educational management and administration.
