EDU 2101: GENERAL TEACHING METHODS

Course Description: The course unit gives an overview of learning theories and their implications to the teaching/learning situations; and presents the various methods and strategies of teaching; explains the various theories of motivation and apply them to the teaching/learning situation; identifies the components of a scheme of work and be able to design one; identifies the components of a lesson plan and be able to prepare one; discusses the various forms of assessment and identifies their implications to the teaching/learning situation and challenges of teaching today.

 

Course Objectives: By the end of the course students should be able to:

Ø  Give an overview of learning theories and their implications to the teaching/learning situations.

Ø  Discuss the various methods and strategies of teaching.

Ø  Explain the various theories of motivation and apply them to the teaching/learning situations.

Ø  Identify the components of a scheme of work and design one.

Ø  Identify the components of a lesson plan and prepare one.

Ø  Discuss the various forms of assessment and identify their implications to the teaching/learning situation.

Ø  Participate in discussion of the challenges of teaching today.

 

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this course/module, you will be able to:

Ø  Apply theory critically to analyze their professional experience in teaching.

Ø  Design a scheme of work and a lesson plan.

Ø  Reflectively evaluate your own learning by developing an assessment tool for your course assignments.

Various Learning Theories:

-          Behaviourists Theory [B. F. Skinner and Pavlov].

-          Constructivist Theory [J. Bruner].

-          Experiential Learning Theory [C. Roggers].

-          Observational Learning Theory [Bandura].

-          Connectionism [Thorndike].

-          Cognitive Theory [Piaget].

-          Vygotsky and Social Cognition [Vygotsky].

NB: With the above theories, you need to:

-          Know the key points [principles] of each learning theory or what it advocates.

-          Be able to apply its principles to the teaching/learning situation; and

-          Identify the weaknesses of the theory [critique each one of the theories discussed].

Explore various methods of teaching:

-          Lecture [Traditional vs Modified Lecture] – Define; Give characteristics; The strengths and weaknesses; and How applicable is it in the teaching/learning situation.

-          Active Learning – Define; Give characteristics; The strengths and weaknesses;

Strategies:

-          Discussion.

-          Role play/Simulation.

-          Informal learning groups.

-          Formal learning groups.

-          Study teams.

-          Case studies.

Cooperative Learning:

Teaching and Learning Methods: Lecture, Discussion, Practical Tasks.

 

Mode of Assessment: Coursework, class presentations and Examinations.

 

Mode of Grading: A pass mark of 50% is required in both coursework assignments and Examinations.
