Poetry is the oldest of the literary genres, and considered the finest of the genres of literature. Because of this, its prominence in literature is of importance. As a genre, poetry is many times considered not for what it is but what it is not. In this course, students are introduced to the study of poetry, how it works and how its meanings are generated. At the end of the course, students should be able to show how different poetry is from drama and prose. They should also be able to write good poetry.
