MPHHP1207 DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION

Disease control/health prevention is one of the three health promotion spheres and the focus here is to have individuals and communities change their behaviour(s) to be more health conscious. Eighty percent of all diseases found in sub-Saharan Africa are preventable and here it is the health promoter’s role to empower people to take control over their own health.
The module aims to develop participants’ knowledge, skills, competencies and attitude in disease control and prevention
This module will learners learn about :
1. Health promotion concept ( History and evolvement; sphere and charters
2. Health promotion and disease control and prevention ( evolution)
3. Introduction to disease prevention:
(i) Stages of disease development [Primordial, Primary, Secondary & Tertiary] and how this is related to disease prevention and control}
(ii) Barriers to disease prevention: Health literacy
(iii) Opportunities for disease prevention : [Settings Approach to HP and Disease Prevention [Homes, Markets, Prisons, Schools, Hospitals, Worship Places]
4. The concept of Disease Prevention [Common Communicable Diseases and NCDs Prevention]
5. Theories and Behaviour change models and appropriate use
6. Health Promotion approaches and strategies
• Medical/ preventive approach
• Behavioral approach
• Educational approach/Peer education approaches
• Empowerment approach/ client- centred approach
• Social change
7. Empowerment domains and approaches: Program models; Concept of working in schools Working with teachers and educational specialists
8. Child development alignment with programme approaches and school health programmes
9. Sustaining the programmes
10. Monitoring and Evaluation Frameworks for Disease Prevention
