This course is divided into six topic areas that include: introduction and basic research concepts, qualitative research methods, quantitative research methods and statistics, mixed methods research, reporting results of data analysis and completing the research project. These will provide PhD students with the basic theoretical and practical knowledge and applied skills required to successfully conduct social research with an emphasis on the quantitative and qualitative paradigms. Thus, the course does not only focus on research methods, but also on the theoretical analysis of the body of methods and principles associated with a particular branch of knowledge. It encompasses concepts such as paradigms, theoretical and conceptual models, and quantitative and qualitative techniques. The choice of techniques will largely depend on the subject area and the academic backgrounds of the candidates. The course shall also cover ethical issues in research.
