This is an introductory course unit. This leadership course aims to provide an understanding of leadership as a critical element of governance, public management and development. The course provides an overview of traditional and contemporary theories of leadership, tracing the evolution of theoretical debates about and around leadership theories, and the emergent paradigm emphasizing leadership identity development and relational processes of leadership. The implications of each of the theories of leadership practice are examined. The course also highlights the complexities and uncertainties of leadership in contemporary societies, due to fast-paced changes of out time. Herein, we reflect and discuss themes such as leadership styles, attributes, and skills, as well as influence of the environment (community, organization, or society) on leadership, thus, evaluating leadership practices within the wider organizational context. Related disciplines such as; leadership studies, social psychology, organization theory, strategic management will provide a wide range of perspectives for reflection and discussion. Other topics interrogated in this course include; social responsibility and leadership ethics, among others.
