This Course focuses on the family as a Unit in Society. The meaning, establishment, sustenance and dissolution of the family as an institution, are explored in great detail as the student is exposed to issues that portray the legal understanding of a family. The student will appreciate the origin of the family and the conceptualization of the family institution, the characteristics of the family. This course particularly addresses the family in the African context, Uganda in particular. Consequently, after introducing the student to the concept of the family, the course devolves into the laws governing marriages in Uganda, the types of marriages in Uganda, the procedures of registering these marriages and their dissolution. This course unit also illustrates the legal effects of marriage, the termination of the marriage contract and matrimonial property
