The course intends to equip teachers with skills for teaching children who are deaf reading in Sign Language. Children who are deaf do neither learn words nor develop linguistic knowledge through social interaction and incidental learning (learning through information from the television/radio, listening to the conversations of others, etc.) in the same way, and level, hearing learners do. They do not have the basic knowledge and vocabulary yet, which is assumed to be known in the curriculum, which has been developed for hearing children with normal language acquisition. That is why it is essential to take time to teach meaning first, in sign language.
